At ABB, we help industries run leaner and cleaner—and every person here makes that happen. You’ll be empowered to lead, supported to grow, and proud of the impact we create together. Join us and help run what runs the world.

This position reports to:

Global Portfolio R&D Manager - Automation & Electrical

__

The work model for the role is: hybrid / #LI-Hybrid

Key responsibilities

In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute to ABB’s success with technology, software, product, and system development. Each day, you will identify and implement innovative solutions to relevant problems. You will also showcase your expertise by providing ideas and by being able to work both independently and as a part of a Research & Development (R&D) team.

This role is contributing to Technology and Innovation within our Business Area Automation, Division Energy Industries (AUEN). We innovate, develop, enhance and maintain products for our system solution business.

As part of Autonomy, Industry 4.0 (I4.0), Digital Data Exchange and Asset Administration Shell (AAS; as one representation of Digital Data Exchange) are evolving as key concepts for future engineering and as a basis for new business opportunities in AUEN. Customers (end-customers and EPC’s) have increased activities, expertise and expectations within this field and ABB AUEN is positioned as a solid supplier and integrator.

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Working as an independent and reliable contributor in R&D projects with limited supervision.

  • Performing various tasks within Industry 4.0 technologies, particularly developing AAS and OPC UA components across the full value chain — from concept building and requirements gathering to design, implementation, integration, testing, technology transfer, maintenance and operations.

  • Understanding and applying applicable processes, standards, guidelines, and requirements, including architectural and design constraints.

  • Contributing to the achievement of assigned targets (quality, time, scope, cost) and raising and addressing risks.

Our team dynamics You will join a highly competent and dynamic team, where you will be able to thrive. The team develops and drives the strategy of Digital Data Exchange across multiple divisions and anchored in relevant customer expectations and requirements. The team is in a very exciting phase where the success strongly depends on the contributions of each team member. The team is a truly international and distributed team with significant possibilities to grow individually as well as a team.

Qualifications for the role

  • You are passionate about and have strong software development skills in C# and Java, with experience in Python and JavaScript

  • You have established skills in developing scalable, maintainable software solutions and are comfortable working across the full software lifecycle (design, implementation, testing, deployment), using tools such as RESTful APIs, data formats (JSON, XML) and modern version control (Git)

  • Experience with Industry 4.0 standards and protocols such as Asset Administration Shell (AAS), OPC UA and MQTT is highly valued, including data modelling using AAS and OPC UA, as well as IoT platforms and industrial communication protocols

  • Familiarity with message brokers (e.g., RabbitMQ) and databases is an advantage

  • You are comfortable with Linux environments, containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD practices (e.g., Argo CD) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP)

  • Experience with Industrial Automation and OT/IT convergence is beneficial

  • You are a collaborative problem-solver with strong analytical and troubleshooting skills

  • Degree (B.Sc./M.Sc.) in computer science, control/automation engineering or equivalent professional experience

  • You enjoy working in an international, distributed team and communicate effectively in English; basic German skills or a strong willingness to learn German are expected

  • You hold a work permit valid in Germany

Benefits

  • 35-Hour Workweek

  • Sabbatical

  • ABB Employee Stock Acquisition Plan (ESAP)

  • Bicycle Leasing

Please note: in the case of equal suitability, people with severe disabilities and their equals are given preference.
